A message from the Family Fund

"From 1 April, the Family Fund will be able to help families living in England who have a severely disabled son or daughter aged 16. This extension of our age range is thanks to a grant announced by the Secretary of State, Ed Balls, as part of the Government's Children's Plan.

Applicants will need to fulfil the same criteria that covers families with 0-15 year olds, including not having been helped by the Fund in the 12 months prior to this application.

We are delighted to have received the £8.4 million. This will enable us to help 17 year olds as well, but not until 2009/2010, at the earliest, as the money is to cover the three years 2008-2011 and is being introduced in a phased way.

Funding has been granted over 3 years and by 2010/11 it will include young people up to the age of 18. However, initially sufficient funding has only been provided to help those aged 16."

Time running out on computers offer
Families of children with severe disability or learning difficulties in Liverpool are being urged to apply for a home computer grant before funds run out. Liverpool City Council, in partnership with service operator Capita, made the appeal after revealing only 12,000 more grants will be handed out nationally before the Home Access programme is closed down. The government-funded scheme sees children with severe disability in low-income families receive specially adapted computers with internet access suited to their individual needs.
